Plus - Scott Cornwall's tips for home colouring:
Scott Cornwall is a stylist to the stars and has more that 20 years experience in the industry. He shares his top tips on how to achieve a dazzling DIY colour at home as well as the latest trends.
Quick tips for home colouring:
Invest in a tint bowl and brush, whilst it looks easy to apply colour direct from the bottle this method can be the number one culprit of colour build up, with users tipping the colourant all over their head rather than just focussing on the roots. Mixing the colourant and then pouring the contents of the bottle into a tint bowl will enable better precession for home colouring and its also how it’s done in the salon.
If you want to play it safe, then only select colours within three shades of your natural colour. attempting to go too light or too dark in one hit is often a recipe for disaster!
Understand if you are cool or warm. Selecting colours which have a cool (ash, beige or platinum) base is preferable if you have a clear blue, grey blue, grey or dark brown eyes. Selecting colours which have a warm base (golden, copper or red) is preferable if you have a bright blue, green blue, green or hazel eyes.
Try using temporary colours to add additional depth and tone. You can wash these into the hair and they don’t compromise the condition but still aid the overall colour result.
Celeb Trends
We’ve moved back into the realm of the three primary categories – blonde, brunette and redhead. Those Jennifer Aniston Jennifer Lopez muted tones are less on trend these days. Instead women need to commit to their hair colour category.
Mad Man star Christina Hendricks is a major hair style icon at present in the redhead stakes. Reds should be worn as a blanket of auburn or copper colour with no highlights or lowlights. The shade works brilliantly on former blonde bases and those who are currently brunette may want to use Colour B4 to remove the dark pigment before re-colouring.
Dip Dying is a major colour trend we are going to begin so more and more over the next year or so. I call it ‘trendy roots’ but actually the method is to make the blonde colour appear grown out or the ends faded. The technique comes from the use of Dip Dying blonde hair with fashion colours, however this new technique using blonde on brown gives a natural and earthy spin to blonde hair. Drew Barrymore has been a big pioneer of the technique.
Cut structure and flat ironing is less present in our current celebrity hair. Instead it’s big and full. Cheryl Cole is still a hair hero and the use of wefts and extensions will continue to help women everywhere to achieve their desired looks. Heated rollers are also a must have for many women. Keeping a smooth foundation in the hair from keratin straightening treatments will prevent frizzing and unruly tresses between washes. Using dry shampoo also retains the style longer and is the secret of the celebrity.
